Great Interaction at 2nd Annual Produce Safety Workshop

The Postharvest Technology Center hosted its 2nd annual Produce Safety Workshop November 4-6, 2014, which covered food safety best practices for water and soil management, cleaning and sanitation, and assessing real-world case scenarios. The workshop also focused largely on understanding the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) produce safety and preventive controls.

The first day of the workshop included an overview of conceptual and operational techniques for risk management, process controls, and cleaning and sanitation. Particularly well received this year was Dr. Jim Gorny's “Conceptual and Operational Techniques: Hazards, Risks, & Prioritization”. Participants commented on Dr. Gorny's lecture, describing it as “very clear and practical”.

On the second day of the workshop, Dr. Michelle Jay-Russell presented on “Assessing Risk in Animal-based Soil Amendments” and “Understanding Wildlife Risk and Options for Corrective Actions”. Dr. Jay-Russell's presentations were described as “excellent” with “great practical scenarios”.

On the third, and final, day of the workshop, the participants engaged in a group activity of breakout presentations and discussion. This activity was a favorite among participants, giving participants both the opportunity to share ideas and to network.

We are happy that this year's Produce Safety Workshop was so well received! Participants remarked that overall, the course “met more than [their] expectations” and are already inquiring about next year's workshop! Please mark your calendar for November 3-5th, 2015 and plan to join us next year.
