The Santa Barbara County 4-H program is asking the community to make donations in the next six weeks in order to qualify for two matching grant opportunities, according to the Santa Maria Times. The program hopes to generate $12,500 in private donations to the California 4-H Foundation by Sept. 30, which will then be matched by an equal amount from the Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation and $15,000 from the Edwin and Jeanne Woods Family Foundation.
This is the first year that the program could be eligible for the grants, the article said. The money would go toward recruiting and training volunteer leaders and club members, awarding travel scholarships to statewide events and providing additional staff time to the program.

“If we had more staff, we could do so many wonderful things,” the article quoted Sherry Mills, the county’s 4-H program representative.
To support the cause, donate to the California 4-H Foundation and designate it for the “Santa Barbara County Club Programs — Newhall Challenge. Additional details about making contributions by check or credit card, are on the California 4-H donation webpage.
